SoCalGas completes 700,000 gas meter inspections, targets 2 million in 2017

Southern California Gas Co. finished more than 700,000 comprehensive safety inspections of meter sets in the first year of its inspection program and expects to surpass 2 million inspections in 2017.

SoCalGas' Meter Set Assembly Inspection Program replaces inspection programs put in place before advanced meter technology, which aims to provide customers with energy conservation tools and enhanced safety, was installed. SoCalGas aims to upgrade about 6 million gas meters across its service territory to advanced meters, an operation that began in 2012 and continues into 2017, according to a Dec. 15 news release.

SoCalGas' inspection program is part of a requirement by the California Public Utilities Commission for visual inspections on all meter set assemblies every 36 to 39 months.
