Hughes inks $190M contract with OneWeb for global internet services

Hughes Network Systems LLC has inked a $190 million deal with OneWeb LLC to produce a ground network system for global internet services.

The deal will support OneWeb's constellation of low earth orbit satellites, according to an Aug. 5 news release. HughesNet internet plans will be offered worldwide to a host of developing countries.

The contract will cover the production of the gateway sites with multiple tracking satellite access points to support the operation and handoff of high-speed traffic between satellites. OneWeb needs at least 600 satellites for global broadband service, but the company plans up to 900 satellites in the first-generation network.

Hughes Network Systems is a unit of EchoStar Corp.
