The White House has warned that President Barack Obama willveto a bill thatseeks to exempt enrollees in failed nonprofit health insurance co-ops from theAffordable Care Act's individual mandate.
The administration said consumer protections are already inplace in the event that health insurers stop offering coverage or consumersfind coverage unaffordable. Special enrollment periods and exemptions from theindividual mandate are available under the healthcare law for suchcircumstances, the administration said in a statement.
The White House said the bill "would create a precedentthat undermines a key part of the law and would do nothing to help middle-classfamilies obtain affordable healthcare."
