The combined oil and natural gas rig count in the United States decreased one during the week ended Feb. 2 to a total of 946, according to Baker Hughes Inc.'s latest North America Rotary Rig Count released Feb. 2 The total count sits 217 rigs above the corresponding week a year earlier.

Oil-directed rigs were up six on the week to a total of 765, which was up 182 from the same week in 2017. Natural gas-directed rigs decreased seven on the week to 181 but were up 36 rigs on the year.

The North American rig count climbed three on the week and is up 216 on the year to a total of 1,288. Canadian rigs gained by four on the week and were down one on the year to a total of 342.
During the week ended Feb. 2, U.S. land rigs were held unchanged at a total of 929, which was up 224 from the corresponding year-ago period. Inland water rigs also held flat on the week but were down one on the year at a total of one. Offshore rigs were down one on the week and off six on the year at a total of 16.
By trajectory, vertical rigs were flat on the week and were down one on the year to 66. Directional rigs were down one on the week at 72, which was up six on the year. Horizontal rigs were steady on the week at 808, 212 rigs above the same week in 2017.
