Nuclear update: Total availability rises despite loss of Grand Gulf 1

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability rose early Dec. 6 to 96.14%, up from 95.63% on Dec. 5 and holding above the 93.61% reported on the same day a year ago.

Total production rose despite the loss of Entergy Corp.'s Grand Gulf 1 in Mississippi. The unit was offline early Dec. 6 after being pegged at 8% power the day prior. The cause of the outage has not been disclosed.

Offsetting the loss was increased output at DTE Energy Co.'s Fermi 2 in Michigan. The plant was operating at 92% early Dec. 6, rising from 40% the day prior. In addition, Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar 2 in Tennessee was warming up at 3% early Dec. 6 after being taken offline in late October for a maintenance and refueling outage.
