FERC accepts plan for extra berth at Sabine Pass into early review

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission agreed to begin an early review of a Sabine Pass LNG LP application for a proposed expansion project at its LNG facility in Cameron Parish, La.

According to a March 8 notice from the commission, the project known as the "third berth expansion" will consist of a new marine berth for LNG vessels at the Sabine Pass LNG facility on the Sabine Pass Channel. In 2016, the Sabine Pass terminal was the first major LNG export facility to become operational in the Lower 48. It was recently joined by Dominion Energy Inc.'s Cove Point export facility in Maryland.

The Cheniere Energy Inc. company plans to submit a formal application by Sept. 7 after completing the FERC prefiling review process. Sabine Pass said it hopes FERC will approve the project by January 2020. Construction activities would begin by April 2020 and would take about 33 months.

The berth would be capable of accommodating 125,000- to 185,000-cubic-meter capacity LNG vessels. The project would include a tie-in to the existing LNG facility. (FERC docket PF18-3)
