Report: Candy sales flat in India for global players including Mondelez, Nestlé

Global candy makers including Mondelez International Inc., Nestlé SA and Perfetti Van Melle either remained stagnant or lost market share in India in 2017 due to higher prices compared to local competitors such as Parle Products, ITC Ltd. and DS Foods, The Economic Times (India) reported March 5, citing data obtained from Nielsen.

Mondelez India relaunched its Halls candy priced at 1 rupee from 50 paise previously, according to the report, while Perfetti has launched products such as Alpenliebe priced at 1 rupee and higher. However, India-based Parle, which offers brands such as Mango Bite and Poppins, has not changed prices over the last three years.

Although Mondelez India and Nestlé both saw candy sales rise by about 6% in the year to March 2017, that still falls behind the double-digit growth of local candy makers over the last 10 years, the report said. Perfetti, meanwhile, reportedly controls almost a quarter of India's candy market but saw less than 1% growth for the second consecutive year.

The report added that India's overall candy industry has been pushing for a price point of 1 rupee due to increases in the cost of sugar and other raw materials as well as packaging.

As of March 5, US$1 was equivalent to 65.05 Indian rupees.
