Public comment period open for Canyon Fuel's Sufco mine lease modification

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced that a draft environmental review is available for public comment on the lease modification of Canyon Fuel Co. LLC's Sufco coal mine in Utah.

The proposed modification would extend mining activity to the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field in Sevier County, Utah. The coal would be mined underground as part of Sufco's existing mine via longwall mining, supported by the continuous mining method. It would likely begin upon approval of lease modifications and the appropriate mining and reclamation permits.

The public is invited to provide electronic or written comments for the draft environmental impact statement through July 13.

The Sufco mine produced 1.1 million tons of coal in the first quarter and 5.9 million tons in 2017.
