Payrolls rise 215,000 in March; unemployment rate edges up to 5%

Total nonfarm payroll employmentrose by 215,000 in March, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 5.0%,according to the U.S. Labor Department's latest employment report releasedApril 1.

The consensus estimate formonth-over-month job gains was an increase of 210,000 jobs, according toEconoday data made available by Bloomberg. The unemployment rate was expectedto hold at 4.9%.
