849 MW of renewable energy projects announced in February

February saw the completion of 109 MW of new generationcapacity. Hydro accounted for about 52 MW, or 48%, while solar-powered capacityadditions contributed almost 45%, or 49 MW. Biomass and gas followed with 5 MWand 3 MW in new capacity, respectively.

Twelve solar projects and three wind projects with anaggregate capacity of almost 100 MW and 750 MW, respectively, were announced inFebruary.

Completed projects

Western Electricity Coordinating Council had the largestshare of capacity installations of 37%, or 41 MW in February, all attributableto solar. SERC Reliability Corp.saw the next-largest volume of capacity additions, totaling 35 MW including a29-MW hydro plant, a 5-MW solar project and a 1-MW biomass plant.ReliabilityFirst Corp. followed, with 27 MW, of which 23 MW was contributed byhydro and 4 MW by biomass. SouthwestPower Pool Inc. was third, with 3 MW, followed by ,with 2 MW. Northeast PowerCoordinating Council saw the completion of a 1-MW solar plant.

A total of 14 units were completed in February; the twolargest were run-of-the-river dams owned and operated by Thelargest was the 29 MW Cannelton Dam HY CG1, located in Hancock County, Ky. Thenext-largest unit was the 22-MW Willow Island Hydro HY WIG2 located inPleasants County, W.Va.

The two units are part of a set of new hydroelectricprojects with a combined 300 MW of capacity being developed on existing dams onthe Ohio River, according to AMP's website. In addition to units beinginstalled at Cannelton and Willow Island, the company is also installing unitsat Smithland and Meldahl. The company is also pursuing a project at the RobertC. Byrd lock and dam.

The Cannelton plant has a power purchase agreement with theMichigan South Central PowerAgency.

Announced projects
The Texas Reliability Entity region saw a major chunk of capacity announcementsin February totaling 600 MW, all powered by wind.

The two largest wind projects, 400 MW Tescovas Wind WT1 and200 MW Roosevelt II Wind WT 1, are owned by Infinity Renewables LLC according to SNL Energy.

NationalRenewable Energy Corp announced 12 solar projects totalingapproximately 100 MW in the FRCC and the SERC regions.
