Subaru reveals inappropriate procedures conducted at Gunma plant

Subaru Corp. on June 5 said a new investigation into fuel economy and emissions tests at its Gunma manufacturing division in Japan revealed that inappropriate measurement procedures are still being conducted at the facility.

The development follows a previous probe that was ordered by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism last year. Subaru revealed then that the data and measurements on its vehicles were "inappropriately altered" and "manipulated" by employees.

In its latest investigation, Subaru found that measurement results of vehicles that did not meet prescribed speeds in fuel economy and emissions tests were still treated as valid measurements. Similarly, it found that although the measured humidity for certain vehicles went over the permitted range of within 30% to 75%, the results were recorded unaltered and considered valid.

"The company is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness," Subaru said in the release. "At present, we have not yet completed a full inquiry into the specific conduct, including the causes, background and motivations of such conduct."

The company added that it will hire external experts to carry out another investigation to look into its overall final inspection processes. It also plans to conduct a review of its practices and implement appropriate measures to prevent the issues from happening again.

Subaru CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga stepped down from his role the same day.
