Southern Power acquires 148-MW wind project from Renewable Energy Systems

Southern Power Co. has acquired the 148-MW Cactus Flats wind facility from Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc., which developed and will provide the balance of plant construction of the facility.

The Concho County, Texas-based project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2018 and will consist of 43 wind turbines manufactured by Vestas-American Wind Technology Inc., which will also jointly maintain and operate the facility with the Southern Co. subsidiary, according to an Aug. 1 release.

Renewable Energy Systems will sell renewable energy credits for two-thirds of the power generated to General Mills Inc. under a 15-year "virtual" power purchase agreement and the remaining 50-MW output to General Motors Co., according to the terms of a power purchase contract signed in November 2016.

RES Americas, a subsidiary of RES Group, said the project is its 23rd in Texas and its second with Southern Power.
