Friday's Energy Stocks: Coal, merchant generators climb among broader sector gains

Coal sector stocks saw gains Friday, April 8, as tradingactivity for most energy companies finished in the green zone. The SNL CoalIndex closed up 5.75% to 40.69.

The top performer from the coal sector was , shares of whichclimbed 7.04% on light volume to close at $11.86. Shares of jumped6.86% in weak trading to end the session at $8.41, while shares lifted6.35% on brisk volume to settle at $15.24. Shares of earned 3.99% to$7.30.

Should each constituent of the S&P 500 pare their directemissions down to zero, the impact would be roughly to removing all the emissionsproduced in France, Germany and U.K. combined, according to the recentlyreleased S&P Index Carbon Emitter Scorecard. Shares ofNRG Energy Inc.finished up 3.51%, at $12.67, whereas TalenEnergy Corp. shares saw a 3.35% rise to $10.79. Shares ofTerraForm Power Inc.advanced 2.02% to $9.59 in average trading.

The SNL Merchant Generator Index went up 1.09% to 95.14.

May natural gas futuresmoved lower in the week's closing session, pressured by the weight of a recordend-of-season natural gas inventory and the impending arrival of spring weather.The contract settled 2.8 cents lower on the day at $1.990/MMBtu.

Among electric utilities, shares of ended 0.12% higher at$50.73, after PowerSecureInternational Inc. said its stockholders will May 5 to decide on Southern'sproposed acquisition of the company.

In the midstream energy space, led gains among thesector and its shares climbed 22.77% to $1.24 on strong volume. Shares ofVanguard Natural Resources LLCearned 14.67% to settle at $1.72 on double average volume and sharesadvanced 13.86% to $8.05. Shares of SouthwesternEnergy Co. lifted 8.36% to $8.68 in below-average trading.

The SNL Midstream Energy Index surged 2.62% to 96.89.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.20% to 17,576.96,and the S&P 500 increased 0.28% to 2,047.60.
