Nuclear update: US output ticks higher as 2 units ramp up

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability rose early Aug. 2 to 97.17%, up from 96.54% on Aug. 1 and holding above the 94.49% reported on the same day a year ago.

Supporting total output was increased production at two reactors. Entergy Corp.'s Waterford 3 in Louisiana was pegged at 91% early Aug. 2, rising from 19% on Aug. 1. Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar 2 in Tennessee was operating at 29% early Aug. 2, up from an Aug. 1 level of 14%.

On the other hand, two other reactors were curtailed for undisclosed reasons. The Calvert Cliffs 2 unit in Maryland, which is owned by Exelon Corp. and EDF Group, saw production fall from 100% on Aug. 1 to 65% early Aug. 2. In addition, output at Entergy's River Bend 1 in Louisiana was cut from 88% on Aug. 1 to 66% early Aug. 2.

As of early Aug. 2, only Vistra Energy Corp.'s Comanche Peak 2 in Texas remains offline.
