Innogy to supply 25 MW of wind power to German train operator

German rail company Deutsche Bahn AG signed a contract to purchase electricity from the offshore wind farm Nordsee Ost.

Beginning in 2024, innogy SE signed a five-year power purchase agreement for 25 MW with the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Energie GmbH, which supplies electricity to 20,000 trains every day via a 7,900-km, 110-kV high-voltage grid. DB Energie also supplies approximately 5,400 train station networks as well as the direct current supply systems for the Berlin and Hamburg train networks.

The contract is Germany's first corporate offshore wind power purchase agreement, according to a Sept. 9 release. The Nordsee offshore wind farm consist of 48 turbines that will generate 295 MW.

Deutsche Bahn meets 57% of its energy demands with renewable electricity and aims to power its entire rail operations with renewable electricity by 2038.

RWE AG unit RWE Supply & Trading GmbH served as the contract and retail partner.
