Italy names Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni prime minister

Italy's president has chosen Paolo Gentiloni, the country's foreign minister, to replace Matteo Renzi as prime minister.

President Sergio Mattarella asked Gentiloni to form a new government in the wake of Renzi's resignation. Renzi resigned after losing a referendum on constitutional reform last week.

Gentiloni said that he hoped to form a new government soon and planned to work within the framework of the previous administration.
