Report: Amazon expanding into sportswear

Amazon.com Inc. is adding sportswear to its growing fashion business, reportedly working with some of the largest athletic-apparel vendors to produce private-label apparel items, according to a Bloomberg News report.

The e-commerce giant is working with Makalot Industrial Co., a Taiwanese athletic-apparel supplier that currently manufactures clothing for Gap Inc. and Kohl's Corp., Bloomberg reported Oct. 13, citing a person familiar with the venture.

Amazon has been turning up the pressure on established brands as it continues to expand into the apparel and accessories market with its own private-label offerings, ranging from dresses to jackets. A move into the activewear market will intensify competition among brands such as NIKE Inc., adidas AG and Under Armour Inc.
