M&T Bank appoints chairman/CEO

M&T Bank Corp. named René Jones chairman and CEO of the Buffalo, N.Y.-based company and its main banking unit, M&T Bank, succeeding longtime Chairman and CEO Robert Wilmers.

Wilmers died suddenly and unexpectedly at home Dec. 16.

Jones joined M&T in 1992, was appointed to the management committee in 2005, and was M&T's CFO from 2005 to 2016.

In addition, Richard Gold was appointed president and COO of M&T and M&T Bank, and was also elected to the board of both entities.

Gold started his career with M&T Bank in 1989. In 2014, he became vice chairman and chief risk officer.

Also, Robert Brady, who earlier assumed the duties of M&T's nonexecutive chairman, resumed his role as vice chairman and lead outside director of the M&T board.
