Hong Kong-based carmaker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. said July 5 that it partnered with Tencent Holdings Ltd. and China Railway Investment Co. Ltd. to launch a new company that will provide Wi-Fi to customers on China's high-speed rail network.
The company, called China Railway Gecent Technology Co. Ltd., or Gecent, will operate an integrated platform that will offer Wi-Fi connections, entertainment and leisure services, news and information, online catering, e-shopping and more.
Geely and Chinese internet giant Tencent hold a combined 49% stake in Gecent.
Geely said it will use its experience in mobility and smart ecology to make Gecent a global integrated mobility solutions technology company.
"Starting off by offering rail-mobility service, the new company is part of a wider move towards creating a smart and intelligent transportation network across China," said Li Shufu, chairman of Geely.
