Nuclear update: Turkey Point 4 shuts; Vogtle 2 returns

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability slipped to 90.84% early Oct. 4, down from 91.43% on Oct. 3 but still much higher than the 83.06% reported on the same day a year ago.

Pulling down total output was the loss of NextEra Energy Inc.'s Turkey Point 4 in Florida. The unit was offline early Oct. 4 for what private sources say was for a refueling outage. Prior to being taken offline, the plant was pegged at 97% on Oct. 3.

Conversely, Southern Co.'s Vogtle 2 in Georgia was at 30% early Oct. 4, having been restarted following a refueling outage that started on Sept. 18.
