Justice Department withdraws lawsuit against UnitedHealth

The U.S. Department of Justice dropped its lawsuit against UnitedHealth Group Inc. over inflated Medicare payments, Reuters reported.

A federal judge recently dismissed the department's lawsuit against the company, giving it the option to amend its complaint by Oct. 13. The judge said the lawsuit had failed to identify the company's officers who attested to the veracity of the data given to the Medicare program or to allege that the officers knew that the data was false.

The department did not comment on the lawsuit. UnitedHealth did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment. Another government lawsuit, alleging that UnitedHealth got over $1 billion of Medicare payments that it was not eligible for, remains pending, Reuters wrote.
