Total US rig count rises with increase in oil-directed rigs

The combined oil and natural gas rig count in the United States continued to increase during the five-day period ended Nov. 22, rising by eight to a total of 923, according to Baker Hughes Inc.'s latest North America Rotary Rig Count. The total was up 330 rigs from the corresponding week a year earlier.

Natural gas-directed rigs declined one rig on the week but were up 58 rigs on year. Oil-directed rigs jumped nine on the week at 747, which was up 273 from the same week in 2016.

During the five-day period ended Nov. 22, the North American rig count advanced 15 on the week and 371 on the year to a total of 1,138. Canadian rigs rose seven on the week and 41 on the year to a total of 215.

U.S. land rigs were up seven on the week to a total of 900, which was up 332 from the same week in 2016. Inland water rigs were unchanged on the week and down one on the year at a total of one. Offshore rigs increased one on the week but declined one on the yearly period to a total of 22.

By trajectory, vertical rigs rose three on the week and were flat on the year at 66. Directional rigs were down five on the week to 71, which is up 19 on the year. Horizontal rigs jumped 10 to 786, climbing 311 from the same week in 2016.
