Report: Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes Indonesia

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the island of Java in Indonesia on Dec. 15, killing three and causing significant damage to infrastructure, Reuters reported.

The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 92 kilometers, some 52 kilometers southwest of the city of Tasikmalaya, Reuters said, citing the U.S. Geological Survey. Thousands of coastal dwellers evacuated as the quake activated early tsunami warning systems, but no tsunami was detected, according to Indonesia's national disaster management agency.

A magnitude 5.7 quake also struck the south of West Java early Dec. 16, according to the report.
