French retailer Carrefour SA closed its last hypermarket in Slovakia in the week of Jan. 22, exiting from the Slovakian market after 17 years of operation, European Supermarket Magazine reported Feb. 1, citing Slovakian-language news outlet HN Online.
The retailer closed the final hypermarket located at Danubia Shopping Centre in the Slovakian capital city of Bratislava, according to the report.
According to local media reports, the franchiser of the Carrefour retail brand in the country, Retail Value Stores, had been on the verge of collapse for some time. The company had already closed four of its five Carrefour hypermarkets, which were located in Slovakian cities Trnava, Žilina, Košice and at Polus City Centre in Bratislava, in 2017, the report said.
Meanwhile, Carrefour itself is struggling amidst declining hypermarket sales. The company's Chairman and CEO Alexandre Bompard unveiled a transformation plan in January to combat this situation.
