Sunoco unit starts commissioning at new Marcus Hook ethane facility

Sunoco Partners Marketing & Terminals LP began commissioning activities in a new ethane distribution facility at its Marcus Hook Industrial Complex, delivering ethane from the Marcellus Shale to different markets.

The Energy Transfer Partners LP subsidiary's facility receives ethane from western Pennsylvania through the Mariner East pipeline system, with the planned Mariner East 2 pipeline also expected to supply ethane to the complex, according to an Oct. 9 news release. The new truck rack at the facility is capable of handling two trucks at a time and may be expanded to accommodate increased demand.

The ethane facility would cater to customers that deal with chemical feedstock, enhanced oil recovery and refrigerant applications, among other businesses, using deliveries of truckloads and ISO containers of ethane.

The Texas-based specialty gas supplier Gas Innovations is Sunoco Partners' first customer at the facility, and previously shipped ethane from Europe as U.S. suppliers were not capable of marketing ethane in smaller batches for their customer base. Sunoco Partners is the first U.S. company to provide truck delivery for refrigerated liquid ethane, the partnership said.
