Tesco Plc said it will continue to keep its chicken brand Willow Farms even after hygiene issues at the factory supplying the poultry were brought to light by a joint investigation by The Guardian and ITV News, The Guardian reported Oct. 4.
Undercover footage from the investigation suggested that factory workers at 2 Sisters Food Group's West Bromwich processing plant, which supplies Willow Farms chicken, altered the source and slaughter date of poultry being processed to increase their shelf life, The Guardian said.
The investigation also revealed footage of chicken drumsticks, which had already been packed for German grocer Lidl Dienstleistung GmbH & Co. KG, being reopened and repacked with Tesco's supposedly exclusive Willow Farms label.
Tesco CEO Dave Lewis reportedly said he was "shocked" by the findings, but added that he believed the hygiene issues revealed were contained at the West Bromwich processing plant, which 2 Sisters had already temporarily closed during the past weekend to retrain staff.
Three U.K. supermarkets have already ceased purchasing chicken from the supplier after launching their own investigations into practices at the factory.
