Earnings roundup: Japan Post Insurance, Sompo Holdings see earnings jump YOY

With earnings season in gear, S&P Global Market Intelligence presents a snapshot of recently reported financial results for companies in the insurance space.

Unipol Gruppo SpA reported first-half consolidated net profit attributable to owners of the parent of €481.7 million, compared to the year-ago loss of €488.6 million.

First-half consolidated profit from the insurance business rose 59% year over year to €709 million.

Life and health

Samsung Life Insurance Co. Ltd. reported second-quarter profits attributable to majority interest of 1.446 trillion South Korean won, up from 946.73 billion won in the prior-year quarter.

The insurer reported an insurance loss of 444.62 billion won for the quarter, compared with insurance income of 981.68 billion won in the year-ago period.

Japan Post Insurance Co. Ltd. reported fiscal first-quarter net income attributable to the company rose to ¥34.09 billion from ¥24.16 billion in the year-ago period. Basic EPS was ¥56.83 versus ¥40.28.

The insurer's ordinary profit dropped to ¥75.25 billion from ¥83.22 billion. Ordinary income fell to ¥1.979 trillion from ¥2.114 trillion.

Hanwha Life Insurance Co. Ltd. reported net income in the first half of 2018 of 245 billion South Korean won, down from 403 billion won in the prior-year period.

The company posted adjusted premium income of 3.366 trillion won in the second quarter of 2018, compared with 3.248 trillion won in the year-ago period.

As of Aug. 10, US$1 was equivalent to 1,128.92 South Korean won.

Property and casualty

Tokio Marine Holdings Inc. reported fiscal first-quarter net income attributable to owners of ¥101.74 billion, up 15.5% compared to ¥88.11 billion a year ago, due to the increased gains on sales of securities at home and profit expansion abroad.

EPS was ¥140.24 versus ¥117.44.

Ordinary profit for the quarter rose year over year to ¥138.06 billion from ¥123.64 billion, while ordinary income declined to ¥1.398 trillion from ¥1.400 trillion.

Sompo Holdings Inc. reported that its net profit attributable to shareholders for the quarter ended June 30 more than doubled year over year to ¥55.51 billion from ¥27.07 billion.

EPS rose to ¥146.78 from ¥68.74.

Ordinary profit for the fiscal first quarter increased year over year to ¥72.77 billion from ¥36.94 billion, while ordinary income fell to ¥993.99 billion from ¥1.015 trillion.
