Abuilding in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx exploded shortly after agas leak was reported early Sept. 27, killing a firefighter and destroying thebuilding.
TheFire Department of New York, or FDNY, was investigating the source of the gas odorat the scene when the explosion occurred, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro saidin a news conference the same day.
AConsolidated Edison Inc.spokesman said the utility company responded to the scene along with the FDNYand is assisting fire and police officials with their criminal investigationinto the incident.
Theblast blew off parts of the building, hitting battalion Chief Michael Fahy onthe head and other parts of the body and causing his death. There were about 21additional injuries: six police officers, two civilians, four Con Edisonworkers and nine other fire firefighters. None of the other injuries waslife-threatening, officials said.
Theproperty is under investigation as a "possible growhouse" ofmarijuana, New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.
