Many insurers consider net-zero a climate and business imperative, and want to play a role in countering the implication of climate change.
Pressure from regulators like the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) who have set out a protocol to its members, to set and disclose their targets related to decarbonisation of their insurance portfolios by 31 July 2023, means that the most competitive insurers are already moving to take advantage of the situation.
The insurance market can easily combat climate change challenges by leveraging the strong influence it has on society and the economy, through underwriting activities and by utilising its existing risk management, knowledge and expertise. Up until recently, responses to net-zero have been mainly focused on insurers’ operational and investment activities. However, the tide is turning at a fast rate with pressures from industry lead initiatives and changing regulatory environment. The shift for decarbonization of underwriting portfolios is in the lime-light and insurers’ have an opportunity to drive change – in a material and relevant way.

Raphael Zindi is the Global Head of Insurance Solutions, at S&P Global Market Intelligence – with a commercial and product management background. In this role, Raphael helps drive the insurance strategic initiatives, validates future demands and client engagements for the Cross Product Market Development Team. Prior to joining the firm in 2020, Raphael held a senior client development role at the insurtech, Cytora. And was the Senior Commercial and Relationship Lead covering for Insurance at Fitch Solutions since 2015 – responsible for driving double digit new business sales and account management growth. He was also responsible for driving thought leadership and value propositions for the internal stakeholders focused on the insurance market. Raphael is an experienced contributor, speaker and mentor across a number of industry leading associations and groups. Raphael holds a Bachelor of Science in International Business Economics degree from the University of Plymouth.

Olivia Brindle joined Fidelis as Head of Sustainability in April 2022. She previously spent four years at Swiss Re in Zurich, initially in the Reinsurance unit and later as a senior member of the Investor Relations team.
Olivia Brindle joined Fidelis as Head of Sustainability in April 2022. She previously spent four years at Swiss Re in Zurich, initially in the Reinsurance unit and later as a senior member of the Investor Relations team. Prior to joining Swiss Re, Olivia was an equity analyst covering reinsurance and the London Market, with over eight years spent at Barclays, Deutsche Bank and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Olivia started her career in 2008 as a strategy consultant covering M&A and financial services at Deloitte. She has an undergraduate degree from Oxford University, a master’s degree in finance from the London School of Economics and is a CFA Charterholder.

Miqdaad Versi is a Partner and runs the ESG Practice at Oxbow Partners. He is the (co-)author of two landmark reports on ESG: one assessing the ESG maturity of Bermudian (re)insurers and another detailing how ESG data is used in underwriting. He has engaged with over 100 leads on sustainability across UK, Europe and Bermuda, covering topics including their current ESG priorities, their approach to net-zero and how they are embedding ESG into their underwriting. His expertise has been called upon at the Bermuda Climate Risk Summit, the London Market Association Sustainability Committee, the Voice of Insurance podcast and a range of insurance media outlets. He has led a series of projects on ESG including covering aligning senior leadership on an ESG ambition, building an ESG strategy, developing bespoke ESG training and supporting on climate/ESG disclosures.
