Ghana is reviewing three bids from local investors for the revival of Gold Fields Ltd.'s Damang gold mine, Reuters reported March 17, citing Isaac Tandoh, the country's Minerals Commission head.
Ghana's government assumed operational control of Damang in April 2025 after rejecting Gold Fields' application to extend its lease.
The takeover offers came from Engineers & Planners Co. Ltd., BCM International Ltd. and Vortex Resources Mining Group Ltd., according to the report. Engineers & Planners is the leading contender as it has been Damang's mining contractor for 25 years, according to a source familiar with the matter.
In an email response to Platts, Gold Fields said the ownership of Damang will be transferred to the government once its mining lease expires on April 18. Platts is part of S&P Global Energy.
"Any decisions regarding the future ownership of the mine therefore rest solely with the government of Ghana," a spokesperson said.
Engineers & Planners, BCM International and Vortex Resources did not immediately respond to Platts' requests for comment.
