Volkswagen AG's India unit will have 69 nonproduction days in 2020, up from its originally planned 53 days as the company continues restructuring initiatives, The Times of India reported, citing an internal planning calendar and a spokesperson.
Škoda Auto Volkswagen India will also discontinue its India-only Ameo sedan from early 2020 and reduce its production by 7,000 vehicles.
The carmaker will have only 180.5 production days in 2020. The company will also shift to a four-day workweek for 15 weeks from the second week of September.
A spokesman reportedly said Volkswagen does not expect the production shakeup to cause any layoffs. The spokesperson added that the shutdowns were necessary for introducing the MQB A0 IN platform to its facilities.
According to the report, the automaker "sells fewer than two cars for every 100 new cars in India."
In October, VW India was granted permission to merge its three passenger car units, Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd. and Škoda Auto India Pvt. Ltd., as part of its India 2.0 project.
