James Butman, the current COO of Telephone and Data Systems Inc.'s TDS Telecom, will succeed TDS Telecom's President and CEO David Wittwer after he retires at the end of 2017.

Over the coming months, Butman and Wittwer will collaborate to ensure a smooth transition, the company said May 30. Wittwer will keep his role as a board member.
