Netflix unveils summer slate; Tubi to release over 100 titles

The Program Guide highlights notable programming announcements and upcoming original debuts from online video platforms around the world.

Top news

* Netflix Inc. unveiled its upcoming slate of original movies for the summer, Deadline reported. The roster includes vampire thriller "Day Shift," premiering Aug. 12; comedy film "Me Time" on Aug. 26; and drama film "Persuasion" on July 15. Other movies to be released include sports flick "Hustle" on June 8, thriller "Spiderhead" on June 17 and "The Gray Man" on July 22.

* Fox Corp.'s free, ad-supported video-on-demand platform Tubi will premiere more than 100 titles over the next 12 months, including more entries in the Black cinema, thriller, horror, sci-fi, romance and adult animation genres. Monthly documentaries are on tap from Fox Alternative Entertainment and TMZ, including one from the latter about the final days of Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant.

The Americas

* Amazon.com Inc. unveiled details of its exclusive "Thursday Night Football" package that will stream exclusively on Prime Video and Twitch. The package will feature appearances by all 14 NFL playoff teams from last season.

* NBCUniversal Media LLC's aggregate streaming service Peacock plans to debut three original films in 2023. These are "Shooting Stars," a look at basketball star LeBron James' origin story; "Praise This," starring Chloe Bailey as a church choir member pushing for change; and "The Killer," in which John Woo reimagines and directs his 1999 action thriller.

* In more Peacock news, the platform secured a multiyear deal to show all theatrically released Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. films. The output deal initially includes Lions Gate's 2022 theatrical slate, which will be exclusively released on Peacock and NBCU-owned networks starting in 2024.

* Paramount Global will team up with Google LLC's YouTube to livestream the world premiere event of Paramount Pictures Corp.'s theatrical release "Top Gun: Maverick" on May 4.

* In other Paramount Global news, the company is working with the creators of MTV's hit series "Jackass" to produce a spinoff series for Paramount+, President and CEO Bob Bakish said in an earnings call. The series will build on the success of the franchise's latest film, "Jackass Forever."

* Peacock will premiere original series "Dateline: The Last Day" on June 14, Deadline reported. The eight-episode series will feature reports from the team of NBC's newsmagazine program "Dateline" about the final hours of a crime victim's life.

* Netflix revealed a list of Spanish-language content produced in Latin America that will premiere on the streaming service through 2022 and at the start of 2023. The slate includes Mexican series "Belascoarán," "La flor más bella" and "Donde hubo fuego"; Argentinian series "Divisón Palermo"; Colombian series "La primera mujer"; and Chilean series "42 días en la oscuridad." The roster of films includes, among others, Argentina-produced "La ira de Dios," "Pipa" and "Matrimillas."

* All six seasons of "Schitt's Creek" will shift over to Hulu LLC, effective Oct. 3, after the platform secured U.S. streaming rights to the Canadian sitcom, Deadline reported. The series is currently available on Netflix.

* AMC Networks Inc. made its streaming services Acorn TV, IFC Films Unlimited, Shudder and Sundance Now available on Bell Canada's Bell Fibe TV service. Customers in Ontario, Québec and Canada's Atlantic provinces will be able to access the services through Bell Fibe TV or the Fibe TV app.

* Netflix will premiere scripted comedy series "Mo" on Aug. 24. Comedians Mohammed "Mo" Amer and Ramy Youssef created the series, which will look into the life of a Palestinian refugee on his path to securing U.S. citizenship.

* Lions Gate and Roku Inc.'s free streaming platform, The Roku Channel, struck a multiyear output agreement for theatrically released Lions Gate films, starting with the studio's 2022 theatrical releases.

Europe, Middle East and Africa

* Nordic Entertainment Group AB and the Union of European Football Associations, or UEFA, struck a four-year deal allowing NENT's Viaplay streamer to broadcast over 40 exclusive live matches of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish men's national football teams. NENT also signed a multiyear extension agreement with Sony Pictures Television Inc. to continue streaming the latest films and TV series by Sony Pictures on Viaplay in the Nordic region.

* In more NENT news, the Nordic streaming company also announced its new Viaplay Select concept, which will initially feature as many as 450 hours of curated premium content. Viaplay Select will launch in at least five territories this year.

* Virgin Media O2, the joint venture between Virgin Media and Telefónica UK Ltd., or O2, introduced its new entertainment service Stream, allowing customers to watch several streaming services, including Walt Disney Co.'s Disney+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

* FlixClassic, a new subscription video-on-demand platform featuring classic films, launched in Poland for €2.80 monthly and €28 annually, Broadband TV News reported.

Asia-Pacific

* Netflix confirmed the premiere of the first part of "Money Heist: Korea Joint Economic Area" on June 24. There will be six episodes included in part one of the Korean adaptation of the hit "Money Heist" series.

* Amazon Prime Video unveiled a roster of roughly 40 original series and films that it will release on its platform in India, Deadline reported. The list includes 22 scripted series, four unscripted series, nine returning series and four films, specials and coproductions. Included on the list of upcoming content are three local-language versions of drama anthology series "Modern Love," supernatural thriller "Adhura," cop drama "Bambai Meri Jaan," female-focused series "Hush Hush" and horror-themed "Dhootha."

* Netflix entered into a content deal with Japanese feature animation outfit Studio Colorido Co. Ltd. The companies will produce three animation films, including "Drifting Home," which will premiere Sept. 16 on the streaming platform.
