Chase plans 2022 checking account changes aimed at overdraft fees

Chase, a trademark of JPMorgan Chase & Co. unit JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, plans to introduce new checking account features in 2022 that it says will help consumers avoid overdraft fees.

Following an overdraft, customers will have until the end of the next business day to bring their balance back to $50 overdrawn or less to avoid overdraft service fees, according to a news release. The bank introduced the $50 "overdraft cushion," below which overdraft fees are not charged, earlier in 2021, when it also eliminated fees for returned checks or electronic payments.

The bank also plans to allow customers to use their direct-deposited payroll up to two business days early.

Chase said in the news release that its customers can avoid or reduce overdraft fees by signing up for overdraft protection and Chase Secure Banking, a no-overdraft service fee bank account, and by not opting into Chase debit card coverage so that point-of-sale purchases will be declined without a fee if there are insufficient funds.
