Streaming OS platform revenue on course to pass $24B by 2029
Operating systems powering devices such as smart TVs and streaming media devices are on course to drive $24.41 billion in annual revenue by 2029 as more supported devices enter consumers' homes and more content and advertising move to streaming.
Streaming OS operators stand at the center of a shift in consumer behavior to internet-delivered video, and those that have been able to scale in this space now collect billions in annual revenue from ad inventory and subscriptions.
Some of the top players in this space include Roku, Amazon, Alphabet, Samsung, LG and Apple.
Though the streaming OS market has already seen its "hockey stick" moment, driven by consumers flocking to internet media during the pandemic, there is still plenty of momentum left for established players and perhaps even room for a few disruptors.
Streaming operating systems are software platforms that serve content to end users through smart TVs and streaming media devices (SMDs).
The streaming OS platform holders maintain the user experience, host the app libraries and solve for an array of technical challenges in linking a TV or other display to internet-delivered media.
In return, those platform holders can harvest several revenue streams, including advertising inventory, subscriptions, transactional video on demand and user data monetization opportunities.
We expect global streaming operating system revenue to grow at an 11.3% CAGR from $14.26 billion in 2024 to $24.41 billion in 2029. This forecast reflects revenue realized by the streaming OS platform holder, but not revenue realized by third-party advertisers, programmers and rights holders.
Our full report detailing the top streaming OS vendors, sub-segment breakouts and regional splits is available on CapIQ Pro.
