Since its commercial launch in late 2022, India’s 5G rollout has progressed at an exceptional pace, positioning the country among the fastest-growing 5G markets globally. By the end of 2025, India had over 1.2 billion wireless connections, with 5G subscriptions rising sharply to nearly 430 million, up from a very small base at launch, highlighting the rapid shift toward next-generation connectivity.
Network expansion has been rapid and extensive. 5G services are now available across nearly all districts, supported by a growing and dense infrastructure. This widespread rollout is enabling operators to scale both consumer and enterprise applications, including fixed wireless access (FWA), which is increasingly providing high-speed broadband in underserved areas. Market leadership remains concentrated among a few operators. Reliance Jio leads with a significant share, driven by early investment in standalone 5G architecture and a strong ecosystem strategy. Bharti Airtel maintains a strong presence in premium and enterprise segments, utilizing a non-standalone rollout approach to accelerate deployment efficiently. Vodafone Idea holds a smaller share and is expanding more gradually due to limited resources.

5G services now cover nearly all regions of India, supported by hundreds of thousands of base stations and an expanding fiber network. Fixed wireless access has emerged as a practical solution for areas where traditional fiber deployment is challenging, enabling high-speed internet access in previously underserved locations.
Despite rapid progress, adoption is shaped by infrastructure constraints, spectrum availability, and pricing. While 5G offers faster speeds and advanced capabilities, higher costs relative to 4G can limit uptake among price-conscious consumers, particularly in rural areas.
Looking ahead, Kagan projects that total mobile subscriptions will reach 1.45 billion by 2032, with 5G accounting for approximately 73.5%. As India also prepares for the transition to 6G, widespread 5G adoption across urban and rural areas, combined with enterprise-focused solutions and next-generation innovations, can drive higher connectivity, improved service quality and new opportunities for digital transformation.
