Global port congestion analysis —Q2 2025

Global port congestion report provides a comprehensive analysis of congestion events occurring in various regions around the world, focusing on five key sample groups: Northern Europe, Northeast Asia, North America, Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean. This report is a continuation of the previous global congestion report.

The analysis examines year-over-year developments in several critical metrics, including port throughput (total calls and average call size), arrival process time, berth hours, port-moves-per-hour and port hours.

Key Highlights:

1. Global Overview: The report indicates a general decline in port efficiency globally, with most regions experiencing decreased port-moves-per-hour and increased average port hours.

2. Regional Insights:

  • Northern Europe: Notable declines in port-moves-per-hour due to larger call sizes and reduced efficiency, with significant increases in arrival process times.
  • Northeast Asia: Higher arrival process times and lower berth productivity were observed.
  • North America: Most ports showed improvements in port-moves-per-hour and overall efficiency, with Charleston leading in performance gains.
  • Southeast Asia:  Oceanside efficiency was stable, with major gateways like Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, Manila and Port Klang improving performance.
  • Mediterranean: Increased arrival process times and container dwell times were prevalent, indicating growing congestion challenges.

3. Container Dwell Time: Analysis of container dwell times revealed mixed results, with improvements in certain ports while others faced challenges.
