Shell PLC on July 6 committed to building a massive renewable hydrogen facility in the Netherlands that is expected to produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day.
Shell subsidiaries Shell Nederland BV and Shell Overseas Investments BV reached a final investment decision to build the Holland Hydrogen I project, which will include a 200-MW electrolyzer. The company said it will be Europe's largest renewable hydrogen plant once it becomes operational in 2025.
The Hollandse Kust Noord Offshore Wind Project, which is partly owned by Shell, will provide renewable electricity for the hydrogen production facility.
Holland Hydrogen I will produce renewable hydrogen for Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, where it will replace some of the gray hydrogen usage in the refinery. The renewable hydrogen will be delivered via the HyTransPort pipeline that runs through the Port of Rotterdam.
