NextEra Energy Transmission LLC commissioned the 20-mile, 345-kV Empire State Transmission Line in western New York, easing congestion and increasing access for renewable energy resources.
NextEra Energy Transmission subsidiary NextEra Energy Transmission New York Inc. developed, built and will operate the line. The line will allow another 3,700 MW of renewable energy to be transmitted throughout New York, according to a July 11 news release from parent company NextEra Energy Inc.
The project, connecting the new Dysinger switchyard in Royalton, N.Y., with the new East Stolle switchyard in Elma, N.Y., will also contribute to the state's goal of reaching 70% renewable energy consumption by 2030 and a net zero-emission grid by 2040, NextEra said.
A new substation at the Dysinger site connects seven 345-kV lines, one of which is the newly completed line, creating a new transmission hub in western New York.
The New York Public Service Commission approved the project in February 2021. It was selected by the New York ISO in 2017 through a competitive process and had a required in-service date of June 2022.
