Chile's constitutional assembly rejected a proposal that would give the state exclusive mining rights over lithium, rare metals and hydrocarbons as well as majority ownership of copper mines, Reuters reported.
The measure faced opposition from the mining sector and, along with multiple variations submitted by Chile's environmental commission, failed to reach the 103-vote supermajority, according to the report.
However, the article that requires miners to set aside resources to repair environmental damage received approval and will be in the draft constitution, Reuters reported.
The assembly also approved a mining ban in glaciers, protected areas and areas essential to protecting the water system.
