SPP selects NextEra to build $55M Okla. transmission project

The board of the Southwest Power Pool selected NextEra Energy Inc. subsidiary NextEra Energy Transmission Southwest LLC to build the 48.4-mile, 345-kV Minco-Pleasant Valley-Draper transmission project in Oklahoma.

The project is estimated to cost $55 million to build and will connect the Minco and Draper substations, SPP said in an April 26 news release. Transource Oklahoma LLC was picked as the alternative builder. Transource Energy LLC is a transmission development venture of American Electric Power Co. Inc. and Evergy Inc.

The line is expected to be completed in 2024.

A panel of industry experts evaluated the project through SPP's competitive transmission owner selection process, as required under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Order 1000.

In October 2021, SPP chose NextEra Energy Transmission Southwest to build a 94-mile, 345-kV line from the Wolf Creek substation in southeast Kansas to the Blackberry substation in Missouri.
