Prysmian to build offshore wind manufacturing facility on Brayton Point site

Prysmian Group, a subsidiary of Italy's Prysmian SpA, agreed to acquire a 47-acre parcel of land at the site of the retired Brayton Point coal-fired power plant in Somerset, Mass., to build a facility that will manufacture offshore wind components.

The facility, which is touted as the first of its kind in Massachusetts, was included as part of Avangrid Inc. subsidiary Avangrid Renewables LLC's 1,232-MW Commonwealth Offshore Wind Project, Avangrid said in a Feb. 17 news release. Massachusetts awarded Commonwealth Wind an offshore wind contract in December 2021.

Prysmian Group, through a $200 million investment, will build the facility to manufacture subsea transmission cables. It will also design, supply, install and commission cabling for Commonwealth Wind as well as the planned 804-MW New England Wind (Park City Wind Offshore) in Connecticut.

The Brayton Point facility was commissioned in 1963 and decommissioned in 2017. The site was selected "due to its waterfront industrial location and large acreage," the release said.

Avangrid is a subsidiary of Iberdrola SA.
