US expected to be richer, grayer in 2027

The population of the U.S. is projected to reach 334.3 million in 2022 and grow by 3.2% over the next five years to 345.0 million in 2027, according to data from Claritas Pop-Facts 2022.

The over-65 crowd is expected to remain the fastest-growing group over the next half-decade and by 2027 will account for 19.5% of the total U.S. population, compared to 17.5% in 2022. Meanwhile, the under-35 population is expected to decline to 43.3% in 2027, compared to 44.8% in 2022.

Idaho's population is expected to increase by 8.2% over the next five years, the fastest growth rate among all U.S. states, while Arizona, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Mississippi are expected to see declines.

The Idaho counties of Canyon, Kootenai and Ada are the top three counties in the country by expected population growth between 2022 and 2027.

Maine is expected to be the oldest state in 2027 with an average age of 44.8 years, whereas Utah is expected to be the youngest state at an average age of 35.6 years.

Median household income in the U.S. is expected to increase 12.1% to $81,230 in 2027, compared to $72,465 in 2022, with 31 states expected to post double-digit percentage increases.

The median household income in Nevada is expected to rise 14.4% to $81,647 over the next five years, the largest percentage increase of any state; Alaska is expected to have the lowest increase, at 5.1%.

Washington, D.C, which is projected to have the country's highest median household income of $102,806 in 2022, will see its median household income increase by 13.1% through 2027.
