Codelco launched the $1.4 billion Andina Transfer project at its Andina Division copper operation in Chile, which will add 30 years to the expected life of the mine.
The project will convert Andina operations from underground to open pit mining, with crushing and ore transportation systems to be cut to 14 pieces of equipment from 50 pieces, BNamericas reported Jan. 19.
The modified Andina mine will use a regenerative, underground conveyor belt measuring 4 kilometers, supplying more than 3.6 MW to the operation's electricity network to reduce external energy consumption.
