AMC Networks buys anime distributor Sentai

AMC Networks Inc. acquired Houston-based global anime content and merchandise supplier Sentai Holdings LLC for an undisclosed sum.

The U.S. channel operator bought Sentai, including its anime-focused streaming service HIDIVE and all of the member interests, from public-private Japanese investment fund Cool Japan Fund Inc., a Jan. 5 statement said.

The acquisition will allow AMC Networks to expand its roster of content and franchises while supporting its targeted streaming strategy for specific audiences to help grow the business.

Sentai's existing management team, which includes founder John Ledford, Griffin Vance and Paul Clinkscales, will continue leading the company in their senior posts. Clinkscales led the transaction for Sentai.

Cool Japan Fund tapped PwC Advisory LLC and KPMG FAS Co. Ltd. as financial advisers, Arnold & Porter and Shiomizaka as legal counsels, KPMG Tax Corp. as tax adviser, and A.T. Kearney K.K. as strategic adviser on the deal. Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP is AMC Networks' legal counsel.
