News Corp. and Facebook Inc. agreed to a multiyear deal covering access to news and information for the social media platform's users via the Facebook News product in Australia.
This deal involving News Corp. Australia Pty. Ltd. includes The Australian national newspaper, the news.com.au news site, and other publications such as The Daily Telegraph in New South Wales, Herald Sun in Victoria and The Courier-Mail in Queensland, according to a March 15 news release.
In 2019, News Corp. agreed to provide Facebook headlines from The Wall Street Journal and other Dow Jones & Co. Inc. media properties in exchange for a licensing fee.
The deal follows recent legislation in Australia that details guidelines for agreements between news publishers and companies such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google LLC and Facebook. The social media giant opposed changes in rules that require them to pay local media for news and temporarily barred Australian publishers and users from sharing or reading news content. Their access was later restored following a deal with the Australian government.
News Corp. has a three-year deal with Google to post articles on a premium Google news platform in exchange for payment and an ad-sharing agreement with Google.
Additionally, Sky News Australia also agreed to a new deal with Facebook that extends an existing arrangement, News Corp. said.
