Netflix tops Golden Globes; Lions Gate, Starz agree on first-window output deal

* Netflix Inc. scored the most number of wins at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards held Feb. 28. The streaming platform snagged 10 awards: six for TV and four for film. On the TV side, the fourth season of "The Crown" picked up the most awards with four wins, including for best drama series. Netflix's total for film included a best actor award for the late Chadwick Boseman, who was honored for his performance in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."

* Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and its unit Starz agreed on a first-window output deal for all theatrically released Lions Gate and Summit Entertainment LLC films under current agreements that expire 2021-end and 2022-end, respectively.

The Americas

* The International Basketball Federation, or FIBA, will stream about 600 hours of live basketball games every year on its own Twitch Interactive Inc. channel and on the channels of its planned network of content creators, beginning in spring 2021.

* A new superhero series, "Jupiter's Legacy," will debut on Netflix on May 7. The eight-episode show is based on a comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely.

* Netflix is working on animated series based on the "Transformers" and "My Little Pony" franchises, Deadline reported. The 20-episode Transformers show, dubbed "Transformers: BotBots," is about little robots that disguise themselves as everyday mall objects. The "My Little Pony G5" series will follow the events of Netflix's "My Little Pony" film. Both series do not have a set release date yet.

* A new anime series based on the "Terminator" franchise is under works at Netflix. Mattson Tomlin will work as executive producer for the show.

* Netflix ordered "Fistful of Vengeance," a stand-alone film based on the "Wu Assassins" show.

* Netflix is working on the adaptation of Alexis Nolent's graphic novel series "The Killer," Deadline reported.

* Marissa Meyer's novel "Instant Karma" will be developed into a 30-minute series by Warner Media LLCs streaming platform HBO Max, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

* HBO Max acquired North American streaming rights to three-part miniseries "Isabel." The show is based on the life of Isabel Allende and will debut on March 12.

* Marvel Studios' original series "Loki" will debut on The Walt Disney Co.-owned streaming service Disney+ on June 11.

* The next "Star Wars" series called "The Bad Batch" will premiere on Disney+ on May 4, Reuters reported. The show is based on an elite group of clones.

* Hulu LLC will release the fourth season of "The Handmaid's Tale" on its streaming platform on April 28, while the final season of "Shrill" will premiere on May 7. Also, the 10-episode second season of teen drama "Love, Victor" will return on Hulu on June 11.

* Hulu will release all 10 episodes of adult animated comedy series "Marvel's M.O.D.O.K." on May 21.

* Furthermore, Hulu picked up the eight-episode limited series "Iron Mike," which will explore the life and career of boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Hulu has also renewed "Animaniacs" for a third season.

* In more Hulu news, the streamer ordered a new docuseries "The Rise and Fall of Victoria's Secret," Deadline reported.

* Cinedigm Corp. added over 300 hours of content to its streaming library that includes over 65 films, 17 series and 44 specials after acquiring The Nacelle Co., Vision Films, Glass House Distribution, Magnolia and Shoreline.

* An animated series called "Super Sema" will premiere on YouTube LLC's Youtube Originals on March 8. The Alphabet Inc.-unit also announced picking up eight new shows including "Book Tube Jr.," "The Eggventurers," "The Guava Juice Show" and "Kid Correspondent," among others.

* ViacomCBS Inc.'s Paramount+ will feature more than 30,000 episodes, 2,500 movie titles and over 1,000 live sporting events as well as around-the-clock news coverage. "A Quiet Place Part II," "PAW PATROL: The Movie," and "Mission: Impossible 7" are among some titles that will be available to stream on the platform following a short theatrical release.

* A documentary about Italian soccer club Juventus, dubbed "All or Nothing: Juventus," will premiere on Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Video streaming service this year.

* In other Prime Video news, the streamer will release a 10-episode limited series called "The Underground Railroad" on the platform on May 14. The show is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead.

* Comcast Corp.'s streaming service Peacock has ordered a physical competition series based on the arcade video game Frogger, Deadline reported. The series will contain 13 episodes.

Europe, Middle East and Africa

* ITV PLC will launch "The Chase Extra," a spinoff of quiz show "The Chase" on streaming platform ITV Hub.

* Eros STX Global Corp. and Amazon Prime Video inked a multiyear first-window output deal in the Nordics. The deal will allow Prime Video subscribers in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden to get exclusive access to STXinternational titles.

* Amazon Prime Video Channels added Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.'s streaming service to its platform, Broadband TV News reported. Amazon Prime Video streaming platform also added Spanish language on-demand service FlixOlé, according to a separate Broadband TV News report.

* ViacomCBS unit ViacomCBS Networks UK rolled out its MTV Play subscription video on demand service on Virgin Media's Virgin TV platform, Digital TV Europe reported. Liberty Global PLC owns Virgin Media.

* Nordic Entertainment Group AB extended its distribution partnership with Norway's RiksTV, which allows the latter to continue distributing NENT's Viaplay streaming service as well as its Norwegian TV channels.

* Three of Telenet's channels are now available on Eleven Sports Network Ltd. in Belgium. From Feb. 26, Eleven's OTT subscribers in Flanders gained access to Play Sports 1, 2, and 3 through a new All Access + Play Sports pass for €19.99 per month.

* Eleven Sports Network also secured the Portuguese rights to stream Women's Tennis Association matches from 2021 to 2023.

* Polish public broadcaster Telewizja Polska SA will launch streaming platform TVP Historia 2 on March 1, Broadband TV News reported.

Asia-Pacific

* Netflix secured global rights to Indian action thriller film "Dhamaka," The Hollywood Reporter reported, citing a statement.

* SKY Network Television Ltd.-owned streaming service RugbyPass struck a partnership with New Zealand Rugby to stream the 2021 season of the Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa competition on a new jointly branded service.

* India's new Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code requires online video platforms such as Netflix and YouTube to classify their content into five age-based categories. The platforms shall also impose parental locks and age-verification mechanisms for content restricted to older audiences.

* Sports entertainment services provider Sportradar AG secured official data and audio-visual rights to more than 1,500 games administered by Australian professional semi-elite basketball league NBL1. Sportradar will supply the content to its downstream partners.

* Netflix will spend nearly $500 million in 2021 to diversify its roster of Korean original content. The platform is collaborating with Korean talents and filmmakers to produce content across various genres.

* Over-the-top platform ShortsTV launched its content offering on Bharti Airtel Ltd.'s video-streaming service Airtel Xstream, The Financial Express (India) reported, citing a statement.

* Sportradar teamed up with the Korea Professional Football League, or K League, to launch over-the-top service K League TV. The new platform will offer live and on-demand broadcasts of K League 1 and K League 2 games, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and game highlights.
