Iberdrola makes progress on renewable energy, hydrogen projects across Spain

Iberdrola SA is making progress on renewable energy and hydrogen production projects across Spain, the company announced in three separate news releases.

In Extremadura, Iberdrola is continuing its €420 million investment plan, with 750 MW of new solar photovoltaic capacity under development in the province of Cáceres, according to a March 4 statement.

The 380-MW Tagus solar plant, in the municipality of Alcántara, is expected be commissioned between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. Meanwhile, the 375-MW Cedillo project, located between Alcántara and Herrera de Alcántara, is set to enter operation in 2022.

Iberdrola has placed Extremadura at the center of its renewable strategy in Spain. The company is currently building eight renewable projects in the region with total capacity of more than 1,300 MW. By 2023, it plans to double its renewable capacity in Extremadura to 5,500 MW.

Valencia

Iberdrola is also making progress with its first solar projects in Spain's Valencia region, which will have an installed capacity of 450 MW and represent an investment of more than €235 million.

The company plans to build two solar plants, PSF Ayora 1 and FV Cofrentes I, each with an installed capacity of 200 MW, as well as a third 50-MW facility, FV Alhorines, it said March 2.

The plants planned in the region will comprise a total of almost 1 million photovoltaic modules and once operational will generate enough clean energy to supply the equivalent of 220,000 homes.

Iberdrola already manages over 2,000 MW of renewable installed power in the Valencia region by producing hydroelectricity at the La Muela De Cortes I & II Pumped Storage complex.

Aragón

In Aragón, Iberdrola is leading a project to produce green hydrogen by building a hydrogenerator at the Plaza Logistics Platform in Zaragoza, with 10 MW of electrolyzers capable of producing and supplying green hydrogen to heavy road transport vehicles.

The facility represents an investment of more than €36 million and will include a solar power plant for self-consumption and supply to Iberdrola, the company said March 3. It also includes renewable hydrogen storage and dispensing stations in nearby areas with potential for consumption in Zaragoza and Valle del Aragón.

Iberdrola has submitted the initiative for funding from the NextGenerationEU program, one of 150 projects the company has put forward 53 of them involving green hydrogen which are expected to mobilize investments worth €21 billion.

Iberdrola manages around 500 MW in renewables projects in Aragón, a figure it expects to double in the coming years, with almost 500 MW of new projects in the pipeline.
