ByteDance to pay $92M to settle case with US TikTok users

Beijing Byte Dance Telecommunications Co. Ltd. agreed to pay $92 million to settle a class-action data privacy lawsuit from users of its TikTok Inc. application in the U.S., according to a motion filed Feb. 25 with a U.S. district court in Illinois.

The users claim the short-form video app "infiltrates its users' devices and extracts a broad array of private data including biometric data and content that Defendants use to track and profile TikTok users for the purpose of, among other things, ad targeting and profit."

The motion seeking approval for the settlement said parties reached it after over a year of litigation, "an expert-led inside look at TikTok's source code" and mediation efforts.
