Italy's Wirlab S.R.L. is the newest co-investor in Telecom Italia SpA's infrastructure operator FiberCop.
The agreement will allow Wirlab to use the fiber optic network to develop the fiber-to-the-home, or FTTH, access market in nine municipalities in the Campania region, according to a Dec. 20 news release.
FiberCop is 58% owned by Telecom Italia, with KKR & Co. Inc. and Fastweb SpA owning 37.5% and 4.5%, respectively. The business's co-investment model allows all interested operators to participate in the deployment of optical fiber in Italy.
Iliad, Tiscali SpA and Netoip are among the other companies that agreed to co-invest in FiberCop, which became fully operational in April.
FiberCop expects to reach FTTH coverage of 75% of Italy's underserved areas by 2025.
